I’m a house painter. I spend my days on ladders, not at a desk — and writing was never my strong suit. But running a business means a whole second job nobody sees: the emails, the scheduling, the “don’t forget to call this guy back,” the estimates that need writing up at 9 PM when your back is killing you.

A few weeks ago I started using an AI assistant. I call it Sunny. And I’m going to tell you straight: it’s like having an office assistant that would cost $50 an hour — and I get it for free.

Here’s what it actually does for me, all day long. It watches my estimate emails — every fifteen minutes — and flags new leads the minute they land. When someone writes in about painting their stairs or their hallway, I’ve got a reply drafted before I’ve put the brush down. I still approve everything — nothing goes out without my say-so — but the writing part, the part I can’t do well myself, is done.

It keeps my calendar straight. It reminds me about appointments the night before so nothing slips. It nudges me to call people back. When I walk through a house and look at a job, I just talk through what I saw — out loud, like I’m telling a buddy — and it turns that into a clean written estimate.

The calls? It doesn’t make those for me. But it makes sure I never forget to make them, and it hands me the words when I do.

I’m not a tech guy. I didn’t go looking for “artificial intelligence.” I just needed help running my business, and this showed up and started carrying half the office work. That’s what AI actually looks like for regular people right now — not robots, not sci-fi. Just a guy with a paintbrush who finally has someone watching the inbox.
